"Feast of the Goat"

This novel appears to be written in multiple levels. It starts out with the perspective and events of the character Urania. The second chapter however is from the perspective of Trujillo or the "Goat," the dictator of the Dominican. I enjoy novels that present a narrative from multiple characters. These differences work to create contrast the novel. This book seems to be similar to the "General in this Labyrinth" because Trujillo's rule and control is coming to an end. Urania comes back to her homeland because it is now safe to return. The dictator's power is slipping and the country seems to be going through a transition of rule. Trujillo states that he "has been carrying the weight of the country on his shoulders for almost thirty-two years." He credits his ability to rule and the stability of his power to: the ability to keep calm, control his anger, and be respectful people of different backgrounds. He knew how to keep his small nation under control (in his opinion) even if he used dishonest means. Another thing that I noticed while reading about the dictator was his meticulous routine. I got the impression that he was a bit of a control freak. He has a strict workout routine every morning. After he rows for a bit he brushes his teeth and shaved as he does everyday. He even mentioned that cleanliness and self care was the only religion he adhered to. To me this seemed to be a clear sign of an obsessive nature.

I also thought that Trujillo seems a bit obsessive. Actually, he reminded me of the Supreme with his meticulous nature (eg morning routine) much like the Supreme and his synchronizing of watches.

I find it very interesting that this novel presents narratives from different characters, too. This allows me to look at Trujillo's dictatorship from different perspectives and to understand more of himself and his influences to other people.

Obsessive compulsive and strict regime not only remind me of the Supreme, but of general dictator qualities. How else could one rule a country so strictly and tight to a predetermined code of conduct?
